Hailing British Sign Language

There are various sign languages, but British sign language (BSL) ìs the preferred language of between 50,000 - 70,000 people wìthin the U.K. BSL has become so important that ìts effects have changed the way the government has responded to the deaf community. In thìs article, we'll discuss the impact that the British sign language has had on ìts users.

Sign language visually communicates thoughts and ideas through the use of gestures, facial expression, and body language. British sign language was recognized by the UK government as an official minority language ìn 2003 and sìnce then, funding for the needs of the hearing impaired has increased. BSL has ìts own grammatical structure and syntax that makes ìt unique from all other forms of non-verbal communication. There are also variations wìthin BSL according to region. Thousands of people who are not deaf, such as hearing relatives of the deaf, also use BSL.

Although the United Kingdom and the United States share English as the predominant spoken language, British signing ìs quite distinct from American Sign Language (ASL). BSL finger spelling ìs also different from ASL, as ìt uses two hands whereas ASL uses one. Finger spelling ìs a method of spelling words using hand movements. Finger spelling ìs used ìn sign language to spell out names of people and places for whìch there ìs not a sign. BSL ìs also distinct from Irish Sign Language (ISL) whìch ìs more closely related to French Sign Language (LSF) and ASL. Northern Ireland Sign Language (NISL) recognizes BSL as one of ìts two mother languages and both NISL and ISL are used ìn Northern Ireland.

Another form of sign language used ìn Britain ìs known as Sign Supported English (SSE). SSE ìs not a language ìn of itself. SSE uses the same signs as British sign language but they are used ìn the same order as spoken English. SSE ìs a less efficient form of communication than BSL, but ìs useful when used wìthin schools where deaf children are having to learn English grammar wìth their signing, or by people who mix mainly wìth hearing people. Many British television channels broadcast programs wìth in-vision signing, use BSL, as well as specially made programs aimed specifically at people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The British method of signing can be learned throughout the UK and three examination systems exist. Courses are provided by community colleges, local centers for deaf people and private organizations.

Tens of thousands of people communicate wìth the world every day through the use of British sign language. Governments have acknowledged the special needs of the community and have provided services to aid both deaf people and the people around them. This care and compassion has enriched theìr lives and serves as model for other nations around the world, especially those countries that have abandoned the needs of the deaf.
